Steppin' It Up at the Health Fair

TWU Libraries at the 10th Annual Community Health Fair

On Wednesday, April 6, 2011 TWU Libraries participated in the 10th annual Well Wednesday Community Health Fair hosted by Texas Woman's University. With a mission of providing health and wellness information in a fun, interactive environment, the event provided TWU Libraries and many others the opportunity to reach out to TWU and Denton community members with information they can use to live healthier lives.

The steadily busy library table featured laptops displaying Anatomy.tv (which provides detailed and interactive 3D models of the human anatomy, and is available via the TWU Libraries homepage under Research Resources/Databases A-Z List/A) and MedlinePlus (a user-friendly consumer health website from the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health).

Also popular was a handout prepared by Librarians Jimmie Harris and Elaine Cox, featuring list upon list of health resources--from books to databases to internet resources and more. "The library is really steppin' it up", observed one student.

The free event featured information from 45 organizations and TWU departments, among them Denton County Friends of the Family, Seniors in Motion, the Denton County Health Department, Denton County WIC, The Family Resource Center of North Texas, Paws Across Texas and more. TWU departments taking part included the Institute of Women’s Health Exercise and Sports Nutrition Clinic, Fitness and Recreation, the Department of Public Safety, Wellness Connections, the Nutrition and Food Sciences Graduate Club and fair sponsor TWU Student Health Services.

The libraries, gratified and inspired by the positive feedback we received, look forward to next year's health fair and the chance to inspire even more campus and community members to educate themselves about--and adopt--healthy lifestyle choices.
